A therapeutic massage is any type of massage that helps to relieve pain and alleviate stress on your muscles. It may also work on a specific problem such as tension headaches or an injury like a hamstring strain. We often assume a good massage is a strong one but this is not always the case. A good massage therapist will be able to apply exactly the level of pressure you will need on a particular day and apply these specific techniques in the most beneficial way…this sometimes means a lighter touch.
Chronic muscle tension can lead to bands of painful, rigid tissue in muscles, tendons, and ligaments which can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. Massage helps loosen the muscle tissue and release these toxic byproducts by increasing blood and oxygen circulation.
A deep tissue massage works to break down scar tissue and enhance circulation to the tense muscles. DTM focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It works by physically breaking down areas of tension to relieve pain and restore normal movement. A sports massage is very similar in application using the same types of techniques but it also will focus on improving sports performance, increasing flexibility and rehabilitating or preventing injuries.
A Therapeutic Massage is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. At the Maple Clinic we offer either a one-hour full body massage or a half hour neck and back. If there is a specific area or injury that needs attention this can be incorporated into either time.
When you book into the clinic, a case history will be taken to establish your symptoms taking into consideration your general health and any past medical history. The area, type and intensity of the massage will then be determined.
