Osteopathy is a natural form of manual medicine which is a health care system in its own right, working complementary to other medical practices. It focuses on integrating the musculoskeletal system with the rest of the body structures so that it may work as a functional unit. We work mainly through the neuro-musculo-skeletal system – mostly on muscles and joints using holistic patient centred methods.
Our main principle is the concept that the body works as a whole, no one area can be considered on its own or fail to influence other areas. Along with the structural assessment, psychological or social factors that may influence the patient must be considered.
All of our practitioners at The Maple Clinic are well versed in looking at the various aspects of a patient’s health when taking a thorough case history. This helps us to determine all factors that may contribute to your symptom picture and subsequently during the physical examination to determine the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is made the treatment approach is outlined and agreed with the patient. Occasionally x-rays, scans or other investigations may be required and we will advise you accordingly, if we think your condition is outside of our area of expertise we will advise you of this as well.
The Osteopaths at the Maple Clinic are trained to diagnose and treat many causes of pain. We believe in a hands-on approach to get to the root of the cause of your pain. We use wide variety of gentle non-invasive manual techniques such as soft and deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulations. We may also use other modalities such as acupuncture, strapping or cupping to restore the body back to normal function and to reduce the chance of the problem reoccurring.
Lifestyle advice on posture, exercise, diet and stress reduction may also be part of your treatment plan. Osteopathy can have a positive effect on a wide range of conditions and is suitable for all ages. Whether you are bringing in a child for treatment or you are an elderly person we will be able to find a mode of treatment that you will respond to.
During the first consultation a full medical history will be taken where information about your current condition, present and past medical history and general health will be obtained in order to fully ascertain how you came to be in the condition you are in. You may also be asked about certain lifestyle factors and sporting activities to get a true picture of your current state of health.
A physical examination will then follow where you may be asked to remove some of your clothing in order to see your spine and joints. You may be asked to perform a series of movements so that we can carry out a full postural evaluation and musculoskeletal assessment. We may then need to do other general health examinations as well as a cranio-sacral evaluation.
From the case history and examination a diagnosis will be made. The Practitioner will then determine the best course of treatment to correct any areas of dysfunction, calm reactive tissues and correct any bio-mechanical strains that may be contributing to your current condition.
